In an emergency call 124 for an ambulance or 112, the single European number; both calls are free and the 112 operators speak several languages. For anything less urgent the first stop is the health centre (dom zdravlja) of the municipality; every municipality has one. The Clinical Centre of Montenegro (KCCG) at Ljubljanska bb in Podgorica is the national referral hospital, with its Urgent Centre on +382 20 412 267. Outside the capital the public hospitals are the clinical-hospital centres in Kotor and Berane and the general hospitals in Bar, Cetinje, Nikšić, Bijelo Polje and Pljevlja; Budva, Tivat, Ulcinj and Herceg Novi have health centres with emergency units but no general hospital. Emergency numbers

  • 112: the single emergency number; its operators coordinate the other services and speak several languages, and a phone roaming in Montenegro receives an SMS about it on arrival.
  • 124: emergency medical help, in every municipality, around the clock.
  • 122 police, 123 fire and rescue, 129 help at sea. Every call is free.

The emergency medical service works through 24 units, one in each municipality except Šavnik, which the neighbouring units serve through the same number. The units publish no street address; the town pages list each one with its phone under the health centre it belongs to. In Podgorica the Urgent Centre of the KCCG answers on +382 20 412 267, and the on-duty line for poisonings on +382 69 110 088.

Public hospitals

Montenegro has 16 hospitals, 12 of them public. The coast has two general ones, the Clinical-Hospital Centre Kotor at Škaljari and the hospital "Blažo Orlandić" in Bar below Stari Bar; two special hospitals on the bay, "Vaso Ćuković" in Risan for orthopaedics and "Dobrota" in Kotor for psychiatry; and the Institute "Dr Simo Milošević" in Igalo for rehabilitation and rheumatology. Podgorica has the Clinical Centre, Nikšić the general hospital and the Brezovik hospital for lung diseases, Cetinje the general hospital "Danilo I". In the north the Clinical-Hospital Centre Berane serves the east, with general hospitals in Bijelo Polje and Pljevlja.

Health centres: the first stop

The public network has 18 health centres (dom zdravlja), one per municipality, and for anything short of an emergency this is where to go. The Podgorica health centre at Bracana Bracanovića 1 and its 11 facilities across the city share one call centre, 19816. On the coast: Budva at Popa Jola Zeca bb is open Monday to Friday 07:00-21:00 (+382 33 427 200); Tivat at Istarska bb is open daily 07:00-21:00 (+382 68 672 898), and in the tourist season the Tivat centre and its clinic in Radovići on the Luštica peninsula (Monday to Saturday 07:00-21:00) run a tourist clinic for visitors; Bar at Jovana Tomaševića 42 (+382 30 311 001) sees patients in two shifts, 07:00-14:00 and 14:00-21:00. Herceg Novi (Nikole Ljubibratića 1, +382 31 343 111) and Ulcinj (Majke Tereze bb, +382 30 412 433) publish phones but no weekly hours.

Private clinics

Private hospitals and clinics are listed where they hold a contract with the Health Insurance Fund (Fond za zdravstveno osiguranje) for IVF, MRI, ophthalmology or hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or where they publish their own address and hours. In Podgorica the Codra hospital at Radosava Burića bb (+382 69 300 300) holds Fund contracts for IVF and hyperbaric therapy and Ars Medica at Gavra Vukovića bb (+382 20 227 224) for IVF; on the coast A3 Medical in Sutomore, at Haj-Nehaj bb (+382 69 188 188), is open daily 07:00-22:00. Dental practices, private laboratories without a public register and practices named after a single doctor are not in the directory; a map point placed on the street rather than the building is marked as approximate.

124, in every municipality, 24 hours a day. 112 also works and connects to all services; both calls are free.

Is there a hospital on the coast?

Yes: the Clinical-Hospital Centre in Kotor, the general hospital in Bar, the special hospitals in Risan and Kotor and the Igalo Institute in Herceg Novi. Budva, Tivat, Ulcinj and Herceg Novi have health centres with emergency units but no general hospital.

Is there a hospital in Budva?

No. Budva has an emergency unit on 124 and a health centre at Popa Jola Zeca bb, open Monday to Friday 07:00-21:00; the nearest hospitals are the Clinical-Hospital Centre in Kotor and the general hospital in Bar.

Where do I go with a minor illness or injury?

To the health centre (dom zdravlja) of the municipality. In Podgorica the call centre is 19816; in Tivat the health centre and its Radovići clinic run a tourist clinic for visitors in the summer season.
