About Podgorica

Podgorica is the capital and largest city of Montenegro, and for most visitors the place where the roads meet: the airport is 12 km away, Lake Skadar about 19 km, the sea 57 km by road through the Sozina tunnel, and the mountains of the north an hour up the Morača canyon. The 2023 census counted 172,139 people in the city and 179,505 in the Capital City municipality, which no longer includes Tuzi and Zeta (separate municipalities since 2018 and 2022). The city sits at about 44.5 m on the northern Zeta plain, and the Morača and the Ribnica run through it. It is not a resort, but it has an Ottoman quarter, a Roman town on its edge, the country's contemporary-art museum and the best day-trip base in Montenegro.

What to see and do

  • Stara Varoš, the Ottoman-era quarter (Ottoman rule 1474-1879), with the Clock Tower built in the 18th century by Hadži Mehmed-paša Osmanagić, one of the few Ottoman buildings to survive the Second World War; the Čubranović house, probably the oldest surviving medieval house in the city; and the hamam.
  • Sastavci, where the Ribnica meets the Morača, and the Old Ribnica Bridge, the oldest bridge in the city, Roman in origin.
  • Doclea (Duklja), the Roman town on a plateau between the Morača, Zeta and Širalija rivers, 3 to 4 km from the centre. It dates from the first decade of the 1st century AD; the town walls were redated to the 4th century in 2018; the 4th-century glass "Podgorica cup" found here is in the Hermitage. On Montenegro's UNESCO tentative list since 2010. The site is open ground, without a ticket office.

Rivers and the lake

The Morača is 99.5 km long, with a canyon of about 30 km and up to 1,000 m deep north of the city; the main road to the north runs through it. In town, the stretch from the Millennium Bridge to the bridge "Union" is a fly-fishing zone, catch and release all year. The small Ribnica joins it at Sastavci; the Zeta (65 km) joins it below the walls of Doclea; the Cijevna (58.8 km, 32.3 km in Montenegro) runs through a protected canyon managed by Tuzi municipality, with the Niagara falls 7 km from the city.

Lake Skadar, the largest lake in the Balkans, is about 19 km away: 369.7 km² in the official survey, 370 km² in summer and 540 km² in winter by the park's measure, 44 m at its deepest. Skadar Lake National Park (declared 1983, 40,000 ha, a Ramsar site since 1995, 281 recorded bird species) charges €5 a day, children under 15 free; the ticket covers the visitor centres at Vranjina and Virpazar. Licensed boats leave from Vranjina, Virpazar, Rijeka Crnojevića and Plavnica, and the park rents kayaks (single €3 an hour, €20 a day). Closer to the city, a 4 km, two-hour kayak trip runs on the Zeta in summer, minimum age 7. Virpazar is 31 km from the centre, about 37 minutes.

History in brief

Roman Doclea was destroyed in the 5th century and the medieval settlement of Ribnica followed. The name Podgorica is first recorded in 1326, in a Kotor archive document. Ottoman rule began in 1474; the town joined Montenegro after the Congress of Berlin in 1878, and the Ottoman period is usually closed at 1879. Bombed more than 70 times in the Second World War, it was liberated on 19 December 1944, renamed Titograd on 13 July 1946 and took back its name on 2 April 1992. It has been the capital of independent Montenegro since the referendum of 21 May 2006; Cetinje keeps the title of Old Royal Capital.
