Wine tasting in Montenegro has one large address and many small ones. The large one is Šipčanik near Podgorica, Plantaže's cellar in a 356 m tunnel more than 30 m underground, a former military airfield, where one-hour sommelier-led tours end in tastings of the native Vranac, Krstač and Kratošija; visits are by appointment, programmes start at €23 per person, and tastings are for people over 18. The small ones are the family wineries of Crmnica above Skadar Lake, the cradle of Vranac, and Castel Savina near Herceg Novi in the Bay of Kotor.

The wine regions

The Podgorica plain. Plantaže's Ćemovsko polje vineyard, a few kilometres from the city, covers about 2,300 ha and is Europe's largest vineyard in one piece. The native grape varieties are Vranac, Kratošija, Krstač and Žižak; Šipčanik pours the first three.

Crmnica and Skadar Lake. Crmnica, by Skadar Lake near Bar, is the cradle of Vranac. Its family wineries are Mašanović, Krgović, Kopitović, Bogojević, Milović, Sjekloća, Buk, Rupice, Radević and Mola, and rural wine households in the same area, for example in Mačuge, are listed in the national rural tourism register. Call the Crmnica wineries before you drive out.

Šipčanik

The cellar occupies a 356 m tunnel more than 30 m below ground that was once a military airport. Programmes last an hour: a sommelier leads the cellar tour and the tasting of Montenegrin varieties. Three programmes are offered, at €23, €28 and €33 per person. The archive holds wine from 1979. Visits are by appointment and tastings are for people over 18.

Tours from the coast

A wine visit pairs well with a lake cruise: on Skadar Lake, licensed boats leave from Virpazar and the national park ticket is €5 per person per day; see boat tours.

Food to go with it

Hosts in the wineries pair their wines with Njeguši pršut, cheeses and fish; add smoked carp and bleak from Skadar Lake and the cheese and honey roads of the north; see what to eat in Montenegro.
