Lipa Cave

Lipa is the only cave in the country set up for tourist visits. Tours are guided and last 60 minutes, starting with a ride on a tourist train; the cave has about 2.5 km of passages and the air inside stays at about 10-12 °C, so bring a layer in July. It opens daily from April to November, public holidays included. Ticket prices and tour start times change by season and are on the Lipa Cave page.

The Ice Cave, Durmitor

The Ice Cave sits near Obla glava and holds ice through the summer. It is reached on foot by a 6.55 km trail from Black Lake via the Lokvice katun, where the park's shelter at 1,800 m is open all year. The trail is graded medium, between 1,425 and 2,185 m, and you descend into the cave by rope or feet-first. June to October is the window; the base is Žabljak, and the Durmitor park ticket is €5 per day.

Đalovića and the rest

Đalovića cave near Bijelo Polje is a natural monument with an 18 m stalagmite called Monolit and a hall of about 100 by 40 m. It is for experienced cavers only and is not open to tourists. Other caves include the Jerina cave, or Turin site, above Radmanci in Petnjica, an archaeological site where a 5,000-year-old female figure was found, and the Novaković cave in the Vraneška valley, 28 km from Bijelo Polje.

The records

The national records: the deepest pit is Željezna jama on Maganik at 1,027 m; the deepest single vertical is NYX, also on Maganik, at 429 m; the longest cave system, 17,500 m, is Đalovića cave above Vražji firovi near Bijelo Polje. None of these is visitable without expedition experience.

The Blue Cave is a sea cave

The Blue Cave on the Luštica peninsula is reached only from the sea. Since 21 May 2026 a Ministry of Maritime Affairs rulebook allows only craft without a motor into the cave; motor boats stop outside, so ask the operator whether the tour includes a swim. It is one of the stops on the Kotor speed-boat tours, together with Mamula island and the Second World War submarine tunnels; see boat tours for the loop and the cave's own page for its protection status.
