Sport climbing in Montenegro means bolted limestone crags from the coast to the northern canyons, plus a handful of big walls for multi-pitch routes. The season runs from February or March to November or December on the coast and in the centre, and from April to October in Prokletije. The best-equipped crag with its own page here is Piva above the lake near Plužine; the others are listed below with route counts and grades.

Sport climbing: all places

Crags

  • Smokovac, near Podgorica: the largest natural crag, 86 routes from V to X+, 10 to 32 m long.
  • Piva, 2 km from Plužine above Piva Lake: 61 routes in two zones, from II to XII, up to 80 m.
  • Škaljari, above Kotor: 40 routes from 4+ to 8b+, 20 to 45 m.
  • Biočinovići at Kolašin, 31 routes; Dobrilovina at the entrance to the Tara canyon, 35; Pirlitor at Žabljak, 25.
  • Prokletije: more than 100 routes, April to October.

Big walls

Lojanik (165 to 310 m), Milošev tok (330 m), the Komarnica canyon wall (240 m) and Zvrnda above Herceg Novi (100 to 120 m) are the long routes.

Indoors and via ferrata

Podgorica has an indoor climbing centre with courses, useful for a rainy day or a first lesson. For a cabled route without ropes of your own, the Via Ferrata Piva at the Piva bridge is about 4.5 km long and opened in 2024; all such routes are on the via ferrata page.
