Montenegro has one established via ferrata: Via Ferrata Piva, near the bridge over the Piva in Plužine, opened in October 2024 under an EU cross-border project and built for all groups of visitors. It is about 4,500 m long. Via ferrata is also recommended in Durmitor National Park, without a named route, and a short cabled passage at the exit of the Škurda canyon above Kotor is offered by commercial operators. Under the mountain trails law, cables and ladders are trail infrastructure and users go at their own risk.

What a via ferrata is

A via ferrata is a route on steep rock fitted with a fixed steel cable, and often ladders and pegs, to which you clip a harness lanyard as you climb. Montenegro's trail law treats those cables and ladders as part of the trail, which is why the same own-risk rule applies as on any marked path.

Via Ferrata Piva

The route was opened in October 2024 under the EU-funded project "Via Ferrata Climbing to Discover the Beauty of Piva and Ibar", run by the municipalities of Plužine and Tutin with the Institute for Territorial Economic Development (InTER), and is meant for all groups of tourists. It is about 4,500 m long. Also in Nature Park Piva: the 1,400 m Piva zip line, the Piva crag (61 routes, grades II-XII, 2 km from Plužine) and the Piva canyon viewpoint at Babići.

Difficulty, equipment and guides

The Piva route carries no official grade or age limit; ask in Plužine about equipment hire. Treat it as you would any cabled route: harness, lanyard and helmet, and a guide if you have not clipped into a cable before.

Safety

Users of cabled trails go at their own risk under the mountain trails law. The emergency number is 112, which covers mountain rescue free of charge.
