The Bistrica at Berane, often called the Beranska Bistrica, is a left tributary of the Lim that joins it between Andrijevica and Berane, just above the town. Several rivers in Montenegro carry the name Bistrica, including one at Bijelo Polje a little further down the Lim, so check which one is meant. This one is a trout stream fished catch and release and a river that has been heavily built on for hydropower: eight small plants stand on 17 km of water.
Course
The 2021 water management plan records the Bistrica as a single water body of 17.29 km in Berane municipality and classes it as heavily modified, because of the small hydropower plants on it, rather than natural like most Lim tributaries. The river also gives its name to the groundwater body Beranska Bistrica-Ljuboviđa, which it shares with the Ljuboviđa, the next large left tributary downstream. On its way down to the Lim the river passes through a canyon section, and the national flood plan counts the houses on the upper river among the places that need protection: 1 km of mobile flood barriers for them is listed as a third-priority measure.
Hydropower
Eight small hydropower plants under the name Bistrica are built on the river, 8.20 MW in total, producing about 30.65 GWh a year. That is why the water body is classed as heavily modified rather than natural.
Fishing
The Bistrica (Berane) is a catch-and-release fly-fishing water for wild brown trout; the canyon section is the hardest water to fish. As in every fly zone in Montenegro, a single hook is the rule, flies are tied without a return hook, and the daily zone permit comes from the sport-fishing club that manages the stock. The Lim itself has a 3 km zone by Berane for grayling, brown trout, chub and huchen, also catch and release, so the two waters can be fished from the same base.
Closed seasons and closed waters come from the national order of 2026 (Sl. list CG 75/2026, in force 11 June 2026). In Berane waters all trout are closed from 1 November to 15 March, grayling from 1 March to 1 June, nase from 15 April to 1 June, and carp and other cyprinids from 1 May to 15 June. Huchen and pike are closed in all waters until 1 April 2029 and must be returned alive. On the Bistrica itself, fishing is banned from the hydropower intake at Praćevac upstream to Idžov izvor on Jelovica until 1 April 2029; the Kaludarska, Talumska, Luška makva, Brnjica and Dapsićka rivers and part of the Lješnica in Berane municipality are closed to the same date. Zones on other rivers are on the fly-fishing page.
Getting there
Berane is the town at the mouth, 92.8 km from Podgorica and about 1 h 37 min by car; Bijelo Polje, with the nearest railway station on the Bar-Belgrade line, is 34.8 km down the valley, about 44 minutes. Driving times are free-flow, without traffic or snow. Up the Lim, Andrijevica and Plav (41.1 km from Berane) have the other fly zones of the valley.
