One night train a day links Bar with Belgrade all year. Train 432 leaves Bar at 20:10, calls at Podgorica at 21:20 and reaches Beograd Centar at 07:08, just under 11 hours; train 433 leaves Beograd Centar at 19:54 and arrives in Bar at 06:54. A one-way ticket from Bar to Beograd Centar costs €23.80 in 2nd class and €35.60 in 1st, from Podgorica €21.60 and €32.40, sold at the stations and online at tickets-zpcg.me. In summer a seasonal day train towards Subotica is added. Within Montenegro, local trains run Bar-Podgorica about ten times a day for €2.80. This guide covers the practical side: times, fares, the sleeper and car-carrier, the stations and the border. The ride itself, with the Mala Rijeka viaduct and the part worth doing by daylight, is on the Bar-Belgrade railway page.

The line in short

The Belgrade-Bar railway is 454.8 km long: 287.4 km in Serbia and 167.1 km in Montenegro, from the border at Vrbnica to the sea at Bar. It was built between 1966 and 1979 and is electrified throughout at 25 kV 50 Hz, with every fourth kilometre in a tunnel. From Bar the line runs to Virpazar on Skadar Lake, crosses the plain to Podgorica, then climbs from 12 m above the sea to over 1,000 m at Kolašin and continues past Mojkovac to Bijelo Polje. About 20 km north of Podgorica it crosses the Mala Rijeka viaduct, 498.8 m long and 198 m above the river. The infrastructure manager ŽICG is renewing the Montenegrin section; the current works include 13 steel bridges with a combined length of 2,600 m.

Timetable and journey time

ŽPCG, the passenger operator, sets one timetable a year from mid-December. The night train 432/433 runs every day of the year. The seasonal day train Bar-Subotica (1130/1131) runs in summer only: in 2026 it ran from 13 June to 14 September, leaving Bar at 09:00, and the next season is announced in June. Temporary changes for works, including replacement buses on parts of the route, are posted under news on zpcg.me, and some trains end at Zemun rather than Beograd Centar, so check the day's departure on the ŽPCG timetable search before you travel. Disruptions happen on the Serbian side too: in 2026 the day train was replaced by buses between Beograd Centar and Lazarevac for a time. When the line opened in 1979 the journey took about seven hours.

Stops in Montenegro

The train stations directory lists all 47 passenger stations and halts on the Bar-Bijelo Polje line and the Nikšić branch, with coordinates. The stops a visitor uses are Bar, Sutomore for the beach, Virpazar for Skadar Lake, Podgorica, the Aerodrom halt for Podgorica Airport, Kolašin, Mojkovac and Bijelo Polje, the last station before the border. Not every train stops everywhere: the night train calls at Podgorica, and the smaller halts are served by the local trains.

Border and passport checks

The rail border crossing with Serbia is Bijelo Polje on the Montenegrin side and Vrbnica on the Serbian side, where the ŽICG section begins. Carry the same documents as at a road border; the entry rules are under visa and entry.

Seeing the line by day

The night train crosses the mountains in the dark in both directions. For the view, the climb to Kolašin and the Mala Rijeka viaduct, take a local train that runs in daylight between Podgorica and Bijelo Polje; which part to ride and where to sit is on the Bar-Belgrade railway page.

Local trains
