Maljevik is a 330 m pebble beach, partly rocky, in a cove near Crni rt (Black Cape) just north of Sutomore, on the stretch of coast towards Čanj in the municipality of Bar. Entrance and parking are free, sunbeds and umbrellas are set out in season, and the water is very clear with rich underwater life, which is why the beach is known to divers and snorkellers: the remains of a Roman-era temple lie in the bay at about 2 m, visible from the surface in calm water.
Getting there and parking
The Maljevik road leaves the Adriatic highway north of Sutomore; the junction is also the start of the path up to Haj-Nehaj fortress. Entrance and parking at the beach are free. Sutomore railway station on the Bar-Belgrade line is the nearest station. By road from Sutomore: Bar 12 km (about 20 minutes), Petrovac 14 km (about 22 minutes), Budva 31 km (about 48 minutes), Podgorica 46 km (about 55 minutes).
The beach
330 m long, mainly pebble with rocky parts and some shade, and the water is very clear. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available for hire.
Loungers and the free half
Every public bathing area must keep half of its length free of loungers and umbrellas and mark it, with a free strip along the water and a passage to the sea at least every 20 m. Lifeguards are posted at least one per 50 m of shore in July and August and one per 100 m in the other months of the season, which runs from May to October, when the bathing water is also tested.
Under the water
In Maljevik bay, at about 2 m, lie the remains of a temple from the 2nd to 4th century: pieces of pillars about 90 cm wide, visible from the surface when the sea is calm. It is one of the dive sites of Bar, and shallow enough for a snorkel. There is no diving permit in Montenegro; dive with a club.
Haj-Nehaj
The Venetian fortress of Haj-Nehaj, first mentioned in 1542, stands on the hill above at about 225 m. A path climbs to the fortress from the junction of the main road with the Maljevik road; the ruin is open, with no ticket and no hours, and there is free parking at the foot.
