Hours: Mon-Fri (exhibition gallery) 09:00-17:00 …

The Natural History Museum of Montenegro (Prirodnjački muzej Crne Gore) is the country's only natural history museum, a public institution in Podgorica founded by Parliament in 1995. It holds over 15,000 specimens of rocks, minerals, fossils, plants and animals in 15 collections. It has no exhibition building of its own, so visitors see its displays in the museum's gallery at Oktobarske revolucije 74, open weekdays 09:00-17:00 and Saturday from 10:00. Groups of more than ten book in advance.

Opening hours and tickets

The gallery opens on weekdays 09:00-17:00 and on Saturday from 10:00, closing at 14:00 or 18:00, so plan a Saturday visit for the morning or check pmcg.co.me first. It is closed on Sunday. Groups of more than 10 must book in advance at info@pmcg.co.me. Ask the ticket price at the gallery.

What to see

The collections cover rocks, minerals, fossils, plants and animals: four geological and eleven biological collections, over 15,000 specimens in all. The museum has no exhibition building of its own, so the material is shown in the gallery and in travelling exhibitions. The exhibition "When Nature Speaks" opened in 2019; the gallery also hosts changing shows drawn from the collections.

The oldest material goes back to the natural history collection of the Republic Institute for Nature Protection, set up in 1961 with the birds of Skadar Lake, fish, mammals and a Balkan herbarium. The museum has published the e-journal Natura Montenegrina since 2001, a useful starting point for anyone reading up on the country's fauna and flora before a trip to Durmitor or the lake.

History

The museum was founded on 4 April 1995 by the Parliament of Montenegro and registered on 20 November 1995, taking over the 1961 collection of the nature protection institute. Its seat is at Trg vojvode Bećir-bega Osmanagića 16; the exhibition gallery is a separate address.
