Veliki pijesak ("Great Sand") is a 380 m beach at Dobra Voda, about 11 km by road from Bar (about 17 minutes) on the road to Ulcinj. It faces the open sea, so waves are frequent and the water is clear and turquoise; the surface is fine sand and small pebbles, mostly pebble in places. Entrance and parking are free, sunbeds and umbrellas are for hire, restaurants surround the beach, and the Best Sunset bathing area has held the Blue Flag.

Getting there and parking

Dobra Voda lies on the Adriatic highway between Bar and Ulcinj, about 11 km by road from Bar (about 17 minutes). Entrance and parking at the beach are free. Bar, the terminus of the Bar-Belgrade railway, is the nearest town with a station.

The beach

380 m long with an area of 12,700 m². Fine sand mixed with small pebbles, with stretches of mostly pebble. Because the beach faces the open sea, waves are frequent, which makes it a different swim from the sheltered bays around Bar and not the first choice for toddlers on a windy day. Many restaurants stand around the beach, and sunbeds and umbrellas are set out in season.

Loungers and the free half

Every public bathing area must keep half of its length free of loungers and umbrellas and mark it, with a free strip along the water and a passage to the sea at least every 20 m. Lifeguards are posted at least one per 50 m of shore in July and August and one per 100 m in the other months of the season, which runs from May to October, when the bathing water is also tested.

Blue Flag

The bathing area Best Sunset (10C) has held the Blue Flag, as has Paradiso (11B) in Utjeha bay, the next bay towards Ulcinj. The flag belongs to each concession, not to the whole beach.

Around Dobra Voda

Utjeha bay, just beyond Veliki pijesak, holds one of the coast's designated naturist bathing areas, 11N1 at Uvala maslina: a 44 m strip on the north shore of the small headland that closes the bay to the west, about 340 m and 4 minutes on foot from the car park by the main beach. Behind Bar rises Rumija, and above the town stands Stari Bar, the old town.
