Pavlova strana is the lookout above Rijeka Crnojevića in the municipality of Cetinje, with the river's wide horseshoe bend below it and Lake Skadar beyond. It is the view most people picture when they think of the lake, and Skadar Lake National Park lists it among its recommended viewpoints; the Cetinje tourist office names it among the town's landmarks. The lookout is a pull-off on a paved road: by car 4.1 km from the village of Rijeka Crnojevića (about 5 minutes), 16 km from Cetinje (20 minutes) and 23.5 km from Podgorica (30 minutes). No walking, no ticket booth at the spot.
What you see
The river leaves the village and loops back on itself in a near-complete horseshoe before it widens into the drowned valley that forms one arm of Lake Skadar. From the lookout the whole bend lies below, ringed by karst hills, with the lake and its reed beds further out. The light is best in the late afternoon, when the sun is behind you and the bend is lit from the west. A second marked lookout, mapped as "Horseshoe Bend", is about 230 m west along the same road and gives a slightly different angle on the loop.
How to get there
- By car: the lookout stands on the two-lane asphalt secondary road at Doljane, in the village of Rvaši, above Rijeka Crnojevića. It is 4.1 km from the village, 16 km (about 20 minutes) from Cetinje and 23.5 km (about 30 minutes) from Podgorica. From Virpazar, round the lake by road, it is 45.1 km, about 53 minutes.
- Parking: the road is paved with room to pull over at the lookout; there is no built car park.
- GPS: 42.36298, 19.06056 (OpenStreetMap, approximate).
Driving times are free-flow, without traffic. The national park charges €5 per person per day; the lookout itself is on the public road.
Around the lookout
Down in the village, the stone Danilo's bridge was built in 1853 by Prince Danilo I, and licensed operators run cruises from the quay out onto the lake; the river page has the trails, boats and fishing rules. The first section of the Top Trail 5 cycling route descends from Cetinje at 660 m to the village at 25 m and continues to Virpazar. Further along that old road to Virpazar, 8.7 km from the village, Macalov brijeg is a café terrace at Čukovići with a view over the lake itself rather than the bend. The other lookouts over the lake, on the Bar side, are on the Skadar Lake viewpoints page.
