Rijeka Crnojevića is a short karst river and the village on it, in the municipality of Cetinje, 15 km from Cetinje and 28 km from Podgorica. The river rises from a spring below a cave in Obod hill (420 m), about 2.5 km south-west of the village, and flows 12.3 km into Lake Skadar, inside Skadar Lake National Park. People come for the stone Danilo's bridge of 1853, the view of the river's horseshoe bend from Pavlova strana, boat trips out onto the lake and the site of the Obod printing house, whose first book was finished in 1494.

Course

The village lies at 25 m above sea level, on the last stretch of the river before the lake. Below it the Rijeka Crnojevića makes a wide horseshoe bend and then widens into the drowned valley that forms one of the parts of Lake Skadar, within the national park; its water reaches the Adriatic through the lake and the Bojana. The whole river belongs to the Skadar Lake fishing area.

The village and Danilo's bridge

The stone bridge in the village was built in 1853 by Prince Danilo I Petrović in memory of his father Stanko and linked Rijeka Crnojevića with Obod. At the entrance to the village stands the monument to the fighters killed in the wars of 1919-1945, the work of the sculptor Drago Đurović.

Obod and the printing house

Obod, above the river, was the seat of the Crnojević lords until Ivan Crnojević moved it to the Cetinje field around 1481-82, retreating from the Ottomans. In the early 1490s a printing house was set up at Obod under Đurađ Crnojević; its first book, the Oktoih prvoglasnik, was completed early in 1494. The national park's register of marked trails includes an Obod eco trail (no. 792 E).

Pavlova strana

Pavlova strana is the lookout on the road above the village and one of the viewpoints the national park recommends: from the pull-off on the paved road the whole horseshoe bend of the river lies below, with the lake beyond. By car it is 16.9 km from Cetinje and 23.5 km from Podgorica. Further along the lake, on the old road from the village to Virpazar, Macalov brijeg is a café terrace at Čukovići with a view over the lake itself, 8.7 km from the village by car.

On the water

Licensed operators run lake cruises from Rijeka Crnojevića, as they do from Vranjina, Virpazar and Plavnica; the park entrance ticket is €5 per person per day. The park also rents kayaks on the lake, a single for €3 an hour and a double for €5, either for €20 a day; see kayaking on Lake Skadar.

Walking and cycling

Two of the park's marked trails start in the village. The old caravan road from Komarno to Rijeka Crnojevića (trail 792 B) is 10.1 km, graded medium, about 6 hours one way; the trail from Rijeka Crnojevića to Karuč is 9.5 km one way. Trail maps are available at the visitor centres in Vranjina and Virpazar. The first section of the Top Trail 5 cycling route, from Cetinje via Rijeka Crnojevića to Virpazar, is 39 km: from the Cetinje exit at 660 m it descends 15.5 km to the village at 25 m.

Fishing

Permits for the Skadar Lake fishing area are sold by the national park, at the administration in Vranjina or by the duty ranger: €5 for one day, €20 for seven days, €100 for a year (€50 for pensioners and students). Under the national order of 2026 (Sl. list CG 75/2026, in force 11 June 2026) catching any fish on the Rijeka Crnojevića from the Obod cave to Gradina and Lisinj is banned until 15 May 2027; in the wider Skadar area trout are closed from 1 November to 1 April, bleak from 15 March to 31 October, carp and other cyprinids from 15 March to 15 May and eel from 1 June to 1 December. Other rivers and zones are on the fly-fishing page.
