Trip 1

Kotor, the fortress walk and Perast

76 km · 1 h 50 min drivingMonths: All year

Kotor's walled town has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1979. Go up the walls first: about 4.5 km of fortifications and around 1,400 steps to St John's Fortress, EUR 15 (residents of Montenegro free), early or late in summer. The Maritime Museum in the Grgurina palace (EUR 6) publishes three timetables that disagree with each other, roughly weekday mornings to afternoon in summer and 08:00-15:00 Monday to Friday in winter; phone +382 32 304 720 before a Sunday or evening visit. If the climb is not for you, the cable car from Dub to Kuk gives the view of the bay in about 11 minutes (adult return EUR 20). Then the coast road to Perast for the boat to Our Lady of the Rocks, the artificial islet with its church and museum; the boat and the church are paid, with no official price or season published, so ask on the waterfront.

Trip 2

Cetinje and Lipa Cave

74 km · 1 h 50 min drivingMonths: All year

The M2 road climbs from Budva to Cetinje, the old royal capital at 672 m. Three stops lie within a few hundred metres of each other: the King Nikola Museum in the former palace (EUR 8; daily 09:00-16:00 in the summer season, Monday to Friday 09:00-15:00 in winter), the Cetinje Monastery, rebuilt 1701-1704 on the site of Ivan Crnojević's court and active, with no published hours, and Biljarda, Njegoš's residence of 1838 with his library and the Relief of Montenegro (EUR 5, same hours as the palace; a EUR 20 collective ticket covers all National Museum units and the mausoleum). Lipa Cave, 5 km from the centre, is the only cave in Montenegro open to organised visits: a 60-minute guided tour with a tourist train from the car park, starts between 10:00 and 16:00, daily April to November, EUR 16.90 for adults and EUR 8.90 for children 5-15, no booking, arrive 30 minutes early; the cave stays at 10-12 °C. With time in hand in the mausoleum season, 11 April to 15 November, Njegoš's Mausoleum is 20 km from Cetinje by road and 461 steps up (EUR 8); the Kotor page keeps Lovćen as a day of its own.

Trip 3

Skadar Lake from Virpazar: boat, Godinje, Rijeka Crnojevića

153 km · 3 h 10 min drivingMonths: All year

Virpazar, in Bar municipality, is one of four places where licensed operators run boat trips on Skadar Lake (the others are Vranjina, Rijeka Crnojevića and Plavnica), and the park's second visitor centre is upstairs in the tourist office building there. The park ticket is EUR 5 per person per day, free under 15; the boat is paid to the operator, and no operator or park source publishes boat prices, durations or a season, so agree the price at the pier. The lake is the largest in the Balkans, a national park since 1983 and a Ramsar wetland with 281 bird species; the park recommends April to June for birds. Godinje, the stone village above the lake, has the Bar tourist board's viewpoint with free parking and is the end of the 4.5 km Zabes-Godinje trail. The leg to Rijeka Crnojevića is routed on the main roads. In the village: Prince Danilo's bridge of 1853 on a 12.3 km river whose drowned valley forms one arm of the lake; above it, the Pavlova strana lookout above the river. Virpazar also has a station on the Bar-Belgrade railway.

Trip 4

Ostrog monastery

199 km · 4 h 25 min drivingMonths: All year

Ostrog is the monastery of St Basil, built into the cliff of Ostroška greda in Danilovgrad municipality at about 900 m above sea level, high above the Zeta valley, with 17th-century cave churches and the saint's relics in the upper monastery; the National Tourism Organisation calls it one of the most visited monasteries in the Orthodox world. The road climbs first to the lower monastery, around a Church of the Holy Trinity and a large guest house where pilgrims stay overnight; from there the section to the upper monastery is steep (10%), very narrow and busy, and the Ministry's panoramic-road guide advises leaving any vehicle at the lower monastery and walking the 3 km path through the forest. No opening hours, fees, dress code, shuttle or parking rules are published by the monastery or the tourism bodies; it is an active monastery with no closing season published, and its portal gives +382 68 800 899 for enquiries. The descent from the lower monastery towards the Nikšić road is narrow, with a 150 m gravel stretch. It is a single stop two hours each way from the coast, so it is the trip to drop if a day is short.

Stari Bar, Ulcinj Old Town and Velika plaža

155 km · 3 h 55 min drivingMonths: All year

Stari Bar is the medieval walled town on a rock 4 km from the sea, with the ruins of more than 260 buildings, a 17th-century Ottoman aqueduct of 17 arches, baths, mosques and a clock tower beside the churches; open 08:00-21:00 in season and 08:00-17:00 out of it, EUR 3 (children up to 12 EUR 1), and on Montenegro's UNESCO Tentative List since 2010. The old olive tree is not at its gate but at Mirovica on the Bar-Ulcinj road (EUR 1). On to Ulcinj, the southernmost coastal municipality, settled for about 2,500 years, and its Old Town above the sea: Illyrian wall remains, 6th-century gates, the Balšić Tower gallery and the town museum, with no official hours or fees published. Velika plaža is 13 km of fine sand from Ulcinj to the mouth of the Bojana, the longest beach in Montenegro, known for kitesurfing, with eleven Blue Flag areas in 2026. A little further on, Ada Bojana continues the sand for about 3 km on the island at the river mouth and is known as a naturist beach. Beaches in the bathing season, May to October; the two old towns all year.

In winter

Trips whose months include December, January or February

How to choose

Kotor is the short day: the walls, the Maritime Museum and the boat to the islet off Perast. Cetinje is the other short day; Lipa Cave on it opens April to November. Skadar Lake is a boat morning plus the loop by Godinje and Rijeka Crnojevića, about three hours in the car. Ostrog is a single stop two hours each way, and Stari Bar with Ulcinj is a long day down the coast and back; neither leaves time for anything else. Kotor and Perast are days 1 and 2 of the 3-day itinerary compressed into one; the south-coast day is the shape of the Ulcinj stage of the 10-day loop. Skadar Lake and Ostrog are the same trips as on the Kotor and Podgorica pages, with the Budva legs; Ostrog is shortest from Podgorica, where it pairs with Nikšić.

In winter

Kotor and Perast work all year: the Maritime Museum keeps winter hours from 1 December to 1 April, weekday mornings to 15:00 (the museum's pages give 08:00 or 09:00 as the opening; phone ahead), and the Perast town museum opens 10:00-16:00 Tuesday to Sunday in winter and closes for January; the islet boat's season is not published. Cetinje's National Museum units open Monday to Friday 09:00-15:00 from 16 November to mid-April, but Lipa Cave is closed, so the day is Cetinje alone, and the mausoleum extra is closed from 16 November to 10 April. Ostrog publishes no season. Stari Bar is open 08:00-17:00 out of season and the Ulcinj Old Town has no published hours, so the south-coast day works without the beach, whose bathing season is May to October. The Skadar Lake trip is listed for the whole year: the park is open all year and no operator publishes a boat season. From 15 November to 1 April winter tyres are compulsory in winter conditions; check the road conditions page before setting off.

By boat from Budva

No boat-excursion operator in Budva publishes a programme or prices online, so there is no boat trip in the list; the boat tours page covers the sourced tours in the country. The one boat destination with its own page is Sveti Nikola, the island less than 1 km off Budva that locals call Školj, reached only by boat, with three beaches totalling about 840 m. The port of Budva is on the police list of border crossings as a seasonal one, open 1 May to 30 October.

Across the border: Shkodër and Dubrovnik

Both are common questions from Budva; neither has stops on this site, which covers Montenegro only. For Shkodër, Albania has four crossings on the police list: Božaj for passengers and goods, Sukobin for passengers only, and Grnčar and Cijevna; Božaj and Sukobin have live cameras. For Dubrovnik, Croatia has Debeli Brijeg for passengers and goods and Kobila for passengers only. No crossing publishes opening hours and there is no official wait-time feed. The border crossings page has the list and the passport rule (valid for at least three months after the planned departure, or an ID card from a listed country).

Not a day trip: Durmitor, Morača

Durmitor National Park is about 3 h 20 from Budva each way by the free-flow road time, so it needs two or three nights in Žabljak, best from July to September: the 7-day loop or 3 days in Žabljak. Morača monastery is about 2 h 20 each way from Budva and belongs with the Mrtvica canyon on the Podgorica page, where it is a normal day. Biogradska gora is on 3 days in Kolašin.

Without a car

The Budva bus station is at Rozino, 1.5 km from the old town, with a ticket office open 06:00-22:00 and the phone +382 33 456 000; operators publish no Budva-Kotor or Budva-Cetinje timetable online; check at the station or on busticket4.me. The Kotor-Lovćen cable car runs its own shuttle buses from Budva to the Dub station. For Skadar Lake, Virpazar has a station on the Bar-Belgrade railway, but there is no railway through Budva; no bus connection is published for Ostrog or for the national parks.

Parking in Kotor, Cetinje and Stari Bar; the Sozina toll

Budva's own street parking is zoned by colour and paid by SMS from a Montenegrin number, e-kiosk or sales points; an unpaid car gets a EUR 50 penalty ticket (EUR 33.33 if paid within 8 days). Kotor, Cetinje and Stari Bar publish no parking tariffs. If you add the mausoleum to the Cetinje day, Lovćen National Park charges for parking at its checkpoints at the park rate. The M2 road climbs from Budva to Cetinje; the coast road (the Adriatic highway, E65) carries the Kotor, Bar and Ulcinj trips. Montenegro has two toll points and no vignette: the Smokovac-Mateševo motorway, nowhere near these trips, and the Sozina tunnel (EUR 2.50 per car per passage), the link between Sutomore and the Virpazar side of the Podgorica-Bar road, so the Skadar Lake trip passes it only if you go via Sutomore and the south-coast trip not at all.

Common questions

What are the best day trips from Budva?

Kotor with the walls and the Perast islet is the short day; Cetinje with Lipa Cave is the other short day, April to November. Skadar Lake is the boat day. Ostrog and the Stari Bar-Ulcinj day are the two long drives; pick them for a full day, not a half.

How far is Skadar Lake from Budva?

About an hour to Virpazar each way by the free-flow road time computed; with the loop by Godinje and Rijeka Crnojevića the day is a little over three hours in the car. The park ticket is EUR 5; the boat is paid at the pier and no operator publishes prices.

Can I do Ostrog from Budva in a day?

Yes, as a single stop: about two hours each way, then the 3 km walk up from the lower monastery if you leave the car there as the panoramic-road guide advises. No hours, fees or dress code are published. From Podgorica it is a shorter trip and pairs with Nikšić.

Is Kotor a day trip from Budva?

Yes, the easiest of the five: about half an hour to Kotor, the walls and the Maritime Museum on foot, then the coast road to Perast for the boat to the islet, and back. Under two hours of driving in the day.

Which day trips from Budva work by bus?

Bus timetables for Kotor and Cetinje are not published online; ask at the Rozino station or check busticket4.me. The cable car runs its own shuttle from Budva. Ostrog, Skadar Lake and the national parks publish no bus connections.

Is Durmitor too far for a day from Budva?

Yes: about 3 h 20 each way by the free-flow road time, nearly seven hours of driving for a short stop. Sleep two or three nights in Žabljak; the 7-day loop and the 3 days in Žabljak page are built that way.
