Žanjice is a pebble beach on the outer shore of the Luštica peninsula, in the municipality of Herceg Novi, backed by olive groves that give natural shade and with a small-boat landing at its edge. It is the beach of the Bay of Kotor boat trips: the excursion boats from Herceg Novi that visit the Blue Cave, the former submarine tunnels and Mamula island stop here for a swim, and Mamula and Cape Oštro are in view from the beach. It suits families, and a seasonal tourist information bureau works at Žanjic from 1 June to 1 October.

Getting there

By sea from Herceg Novi on an excursion or taxi boat. The Luštica panoramic road from the big roundabout on the Tivat-Budva road is a winding 40 km route through Krašići, Klinci, Mrkovi and Tići to Luštica Bay, with narrow, steep stretches; the villages of the outer shore are reached from it. Boat fares and times are set by the operators on the Herceg Novi waterfront.

The beach

Pebble, with olive groves behind the shore that give natural shade. A landing for small boats sits at the edge of the beach. The water is open sea at the mouth of the bay.

Loungers and the free half

Every public bathing area must keep half of its length free of loungers and umbrellas and mark it, with a free strip along the water and a passage to the sea at least every 20 m. Lifeguards are posted at least one per 50 m of shore in July and August and one per 100 m in the other months of the season, which runs from May to October, when the bathing water is also tested.

Blue Flag

The bathing areas "Porto" and "Cuba Libre" at Žanjice were on the Blue Flag list in seasons up to 2012. In Montenegro the flag goes to a single bathing area run by one concession holder, not to a whole beach.

  • The Blue Cave and Mamula, the fortress island at the mouth of the bay.
  • Plavi horizonti on the Tivat side of Luštica.
