August is the peak of the year: hotels, campsites and other collective accommodation recorded 244,904 arrivals in August 2025, more than in any other month. On the 1961-1990 normals it is as hot as July, with average highs of 31.6 °C in Podgorica and 27.8 °C in Bar. Lifeguards are at full strength, every hiking area is open, and the calendar runs from Lake Fest near Nikšić early in the month to Boka Night in Kotor (Saturday 22 August in 2026) and Sea Dance on Bečići beach at the end.

The figures are ZHMS climate normals for 1961-1990, the only normals the institute publishes. Kotor and Budva have no ZHMS station; Herceg Novi and Bar are the nearest coastal stations.

Where to go

  • Kotor on Boka Night, the second-to-last Saturday of August by the municipality's programme (22 August in 2026), when the lit boats parade on the bay from 21:00; KotorArt runs to mid-August.
  • Herceg Novi for Operosa at Forte Mare in the second week and the Film Festival at Kanli kula in the last week.
  • Budva, Bečići and Petrovac for Grad teatar until 23 August, Petrovac Night and, at the month's end, Sea Dance on Bečići beach. This is the busiest stretch of coast in the busiest month, with full lifeguard staffing on the beaches.
  • Nikšić and Krupac lake for Lake Fest in the first half of the month.
  • Kolašin and Žabljak for 8 to 12 °C cooler days than Podgorica, trail and bike races, and the Downhill Durmitor at the end of the month; every hiking area is open.

What to pack

Summer kit for the coast and Podgorica: highs of 28 to 32 °C, nights of 18 to 20 °C and only 5 to 6 wet days, so sun protection matters more than rain gear. Swimwear for beaches at full lifeguard staffing. For Boka Night and the festival evenings, which start around 21:00 outdoors, a light layer is enough. For the mountains pack a fleece and a rain jacket: Kolašin and Žabljak drop to about 8 °C at night and have rain on 9 to 11 days. Book accommodation ahead: August has the most arrivals of the year.

A sample week around Boka Night

  2. Day 3, Herceg Novi: the Film Festival at Kanli kula (22-28 August in 2026).
